Have you ever written a story then hidden it away, afraid it wouldn’t be good enough to publish? Or penned a poem and left it silent, lost in a forgotten notebook?
Doubt is the main reason people shut creativity out of their lives. Not lack of skill. Not lack of inspiration. And definitely not lack of enjoyment. Just Doubt.
The crushing expectation that whatever we write must be Nobel Prize worthy forces many of us to wave creativity goodbye in primary school. We leave it to those who appear more talented than us.
How come we continue to play sport when professionals are so much better than us? We jog, swim, and hurl balls in a dozen different ways when our performances are terrible compared to those at the top of their game. YET WE STILL HAVE FUN.
So why do we apply double standards to writing? Yes, some may have more of a knack for it, and win more praise than you, but that should not deprive you of a chance to shine yourself: a chance that perhaps could lead to a future greatness for yourself.
